Using mHealth to reach meaningful use stage 2, patient engagement

Meaningful use stage 2 doesn't require mHealth outreach to a provider's patient population, but how can you achieve patient engagement without it?

BOSTON -- Meaningful use stage 2 has a tricky -- for some providers -- provision mandating patient engagement with electronic health data, at least in its current proposed state. It's not tricky for Kaiser Permanente, a health care organization that drives patient engagement via its mHealth initiatives.

At the Health 2.0 Spring Fling conference, we sat down with Brian Gardner, Kaiser's principal program manager for its Mobility Center of Excellence, to learn about using mHealth to boost patient interest in their own health, increase participation in their health care and generally connect more with their health care provider between visits.

Gardner concludes the interview by offering tips for health care providers just getting started with their own patient engagement initiatives.
