Tegethoff: Implementing ICD-10, meaningful use a 'timing challenge'

Gretchen Tegethoff, VP/CIO of Athens Regional Health System in Georgia, talks about how a meaningful use extension would help with ICD-10 implementation.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Think you've got a challenge, upgrading your EHR system to 2014 ONC certification standards required for meaningful use stage 2? Try ripping and replacing your EHR between stages 1 and 2, which is what Gretchen Tegethoff, vice president and CIO of Athens Regional Health System, in Georgia, has on her plate.

She and her peers at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives used the platform of National Health IT Week to lobby legislators for an extension of meaningful use stage 2 implementation deadlines. It only makes sense, Tegethoff feels, because healthcare providers are pressed for time in their ICD-10 implementations, preparing for the next meaningful use requirements and securing networks to comply with HIPAA omnibus rules. In this podcast, she discusses how a CIO can divide all these initiatives -- and conquer them.
