Podcast: Exclusive interview with ONC head Farzad Mostashari, M.D.

We sit down with federal health IT coordinator Farzad Mostashari, M.D. to talk about meaningful use stage 2, a White House meeting about patient data access and the election season.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- "The Blue Button on steroids" was how attendees characterized a new initiative that emerged from discussions at a White House health IT summit meeting convened by U.S. CTO Todd Park to kick off a busy week in health IT. The gathering included vendors, policymakers, federal agency representatives, health care providers and -- most importantly -- patient advocates.

What is it? How does it work? We sat down with the national health IT coordinator Farzad Mostashari, M.D. (and also fellow White House summit attendee, Avado CEO Dave Chase) to discuss this new idea of data exchange and patient engagement that commercial insurers -- such as Aetna -- in attendance endorsed.

Also on the docket in this podcast: Asking the ONC head if meaningful use stage 2 is still on target for August release and what he thinks will come out of Datapalooza and various other health IT-related events held in D.C. during the busy month of June. We also pose the question every HIT insider would love to ask: How does an election season influence this process of creating meaningful use and the timing of the stage 2 final rule? Listen to hear his perspective on these issues and more.
