 HL7 Versions and EHR implementation

With different vendors now using/supporting different versions of HL7. (There are eight iterations of HL7 v.2)What is the price to client expense and future implementations on existing systems.

I think it will be very much like the claim formats (NSF and 4010) have been where just about very payer wants something different in certain fields which are not part of the NORMAL specs. I have found the Labs and etc already do not use the same data for HL7 versions like 2.3.1. You can only imagine how confusing and complicated it will become with eight iterations and each one of those having special requirements based on the Lab or other party requested a special tweak. Can you say never ending nightmare for software vendors?
