HL7 (Health Level Seven) is an organization involved in development of international healthcare standards. HL7 standard is widely used for data exchange in healthcare industry for integrating disparate systems.

Even though, RIS PACS deals with imaging and use DICOM standard (which is another standard for image transfers), RIS PACS have to talk to other systems present in a hospital or similar entity to provide collective goal. It is here that HL7 comes into picture, to add value of RIS PACS by integrating to other systems.

Integration is major challenge in Healthcare industry, and one should prefer the RIS PACS vendors, who have built in HL7 interfaces in it.
