New ONC workgroup to discuss HITECH security, privacy

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has formed yet another workgroup. This one will discuss the  Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act’s security and privacy requirements, and it will do so for the next few months.

Members of the workgroup, dubbed the Privacy and Security Tiger Team, come from the ONC’s Health IT Standards Committee and Health IT Policy Committee, as well as the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, or NCVHS. Deven McGraw, director of the Health Privacy Project at the Center for Democracy & Technology, and Paul Egerman, co-chairman of the policy committee’s workgroup on certification and adoption, serve as co-chairman for the new workgroup.

The Privacy and Security Tiger Team met twice last week, and meets again June 22 at 10 a.m. EDT. Given what the HITECH security and privacy rules mean for data breach notification and other key provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), it’s not a stretch to say this group will have its hands full.
