Some regional extension centers offer a selected EHR vendor list

Many regional extension centers offer a list of selected EHR vendors. Which vendors are making the preferred lists? Find out in this list.

Regional extension centers (RECs) were created under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act's Health Information Technology Extension Program to assist health care providers with the adoption of health IT, particularly electronic health record (EHR) systems. So far, the program has established 62 RECs across the country, each assigned to a specific geographic area.

RECs have been given the task of providing EHR support services, a job that includes helping providers choose an appropriate certified EHR system. Given the growing number of certified EHR systems and modules to choose from, selecting the right vendor and product is no easy task, especially for providers with limited time, knowledge or resources.

To help streamline the selection process, some RECs have chosen to offer a list of selected EHR vendors (also known as preferred EHR vendors) that have been prequalified or otherwise vetted. In many cases, REC members can receive group purchasing discounts from them.

The table below names the selected EHR vendors for each REC that has published a list, and the status of those that have not. To date, almost 40% (24 of 62) of the RECs have published a list of preferred or selected EHR vendors. Of the remaining 60%, some are still in the selection process, some have a list but do not publish it, and some have chosen to remain vendor-neutral but will assist members in selecting an EHR vendor.

Many of the EHR vendor names are familiar: Allscripts Healthcare Solutions Inc., athenahealth Inc., eClinicalWorks LLC, NextGen Healthcare Information Systems Inc., GE Healthcare and Sage Software Healthcare Inc.are among the more common ones. Because not all RECs have published a list, it's impossible to say exactly which vendors may be dominating the market for REC business.
