HIMSS board chair discusses EHR Incentive Programs progress

We sat down with the HIMSS board chairwoman to discuss new federal EHR adoption figures and long-term technology objectives that hospital CIOs should keep in their sights.

As the health care industry pushes from stage 1 to stage 2 of meaningful use -- which is due to be finalized later this year -- the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released new figures highlighting the progress of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Programs.

This interview with Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) board chairwoman Charlene Underwood -- who also is director of government and industry affairs for Siemens Medical Solutions -- provides analysis of what real progress that means. She mashed up those stats with HIMSS Analytics’ own market research to offer her unique mountaintop perspective on the EHR Incentive Programs.

Underwood also offers insight on what new technologies hospitals will be implementing in the longer term, as analytics and clinical decision support tools become more important in later stages of meaningful use.
