HIMSS conference 2016: Range of health IT experience present

Coming up soon, the HIMSS conference 2016 and show in Las Vegas is a unique opportunity for sectors of health IT -- vendors, users, regulators and others -- to come together.

HIMSS conference 2016, North America's biggest health IT show, returns Feb. 29-March 4 to Las Vegas, an appropriate location given that so many vendors and healthcare organizations are betting big on new technologies for healthcare, such as cloud and Internet of Medical Things.

In this HIT Squad podcast, SearchHealthIT writers Shaun Sutner and Kristen Lee talk about their plans and expectations for covering the HIMSS 2016, formally called the HIMSS16 Conference and Exhibition.

In addition to technologies such as medical device integration and cloud applications, Sutner says he is anticipating big presences at the show by giant mainstream tech vendors -- such as Oracle, SAP and Salesforce -- that have moved vigorously into health IT.

As for Lee, who will be video-interviewing health system CIOs at the CHIME (College of Healthcare Information Management Executives) forum the day before the event officially starts, she plans to focus on these health IT hot topics, among others, with the CIOs:

EHR integration strategies

Sutner also plans to cover a keynote session early in the show featuring a joint presentation by EHR vendor athenahealth, Inc. CEO Jonathan Bush and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center CIO John Halamka.

Meanwhile, Lee has an interview scheduled with Charles Macias, M.D., chief clinical systems integration officer for Texas Children's Hospital, about using analytics to lower labor costs associated with physician billing and building evidence-based clinical standards into care flow.

In the podcast, Sutner also notes that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will be giving HIMSS conference 2016's final keynote, but that Sutner and other New England Patriots fans who prefer quarterback Tom Brady will ignore that presentation.
