Q:
VMWare vs. other virtualization options

What do you use for virtualization? I've spent most of my time using VMWare but I'd like to hear what others prefer using.

Our group has been using for several years now VMWare, but in the last year we started to experiment and support Microsoft Hyper V. It has a lot of functionality, but our virtualization team still prefers VMWare products. They seem to have more experience in this arena and functionality. Personally I have Virtual-box on my laptop to run few test machines and Linux.

This fall we surveyed SearchHealthIT.com site members on their use of virtualization technology. For starters, nearly three-fourths of respondents are using server virtualization, though a majority (63%) use it for less than half of their servers.

As for the specific technology that’s used, here are those results:

 • 73% are using VMware products
 • 44% have Citrix technology
 • 40% are using Microsoft
 • 10% have Oracle systems
 • 6% use Red Hate
 • 5% have Novell products
 • Finally, 2% use Ubuntu

What’s obvious from our survey is that most facilities are using more than one vendor, though VMware is a clear favorite.

Virtualization is moving from adolescence to maturity. The licensing costs seem to be increasing rather than decreasing. The engineering decision to use this in production is somewhat a romantic notion because vendors who provide cutting edge software do not always play nice (compatible/support) with virtualization software. For testing and non-production environments to support advanced EMR/EHR environments we use it. Keeping a eye on installed base and only if the software manufacturer specifically support it. We do not beta test software that will be used in production “to see” if it will work on virtualization packages.
