A RIS system or Radiology Information System to radiologists is what an electronic Medical Records complete system) is to physicians. Not only it will allow you to extract images (modalities and studies) from a PACS system, but it contains additional features such as patient tracking, report templates, scheduling, and additional functionalities.

Radiologist can view all the different studies performed on the patient, and also enter the procedures performed and send reports of their findings to the ordering physician via eFax, email or HL7.

There are several packages in the market available, however, if you want to play around with one and get to know what capabilities a RIS has, you can check out the open source ClearCanvas for some hands on.
