Depending on which HIE you will be participating in, the end result will be the same. You will need to provide some type of direct connectivity (or at least one single IP /Port for the requests to go to. Since all records will still remain in your system the Record locator service will query the information and submit to your system a request and then receive of approved the response with an attached CCD/CCR.

The key here would be to clearly understand the expectations and also the risks when establishing connectivity with an HIE. There are specific bandwidth requirements as well as resources that will need to be reviewed to ensure they are going to impact the overall system.
