Q:
Are specialists included in the populations an REC serves?

Are there some eligible providers that RECs do not serve? I've heard they do not help specialists. Are all the RECs under charter to serve the same populations of doctors?

The main role of the RECs, under the HITECH Act, is to help small physician practices with EHR implementation. The stipulation is that such practices would not ordinarily possess either the resources or the technical know-how to implement EHR themselves.

Under the HITECH Act, RECs are not specifically barred from serving certain specialties. However, it is worth pointing out that many RECs are working with preferred EHR vendors, since they have limited resources and have therefore deemed it too difficult to support all EHR systems on the market. As a result, specialists using (or planning to use) an EHR system that has been meaningful use certified but is not among the "preferred" EHRs of their local REC may not be able to get the EHR implementation support that they want. In these cases, specialists should work directly with EHR vendors to ensure that implementation, training, maintenance and support will be provided.
