Microsoft Amalga HIS, we hardly knew ye

hospital information systems, Microsoft Amalga

Microsoft’s hospital information system, Amalga HIS, is dead, reports John Moore of Chilmark Research.

For a number of reasons, Moore is not surprised — Amalga HIS has a whopping six customers (all outside the United States), the market for acute care electronic health record (EHR) systems is bloated enough, and, let’s face it, most hospitals already have an EHR system (ineffective though it may be).

This won’t affect Microsoft’s other Amalga offerings, known as Amalga Life Sciences and the Amalga Unified Intelligence System (UIS). These focus primarily on research, data analytics and quality reporting. Such a focus actually gives Microsoft a chance to be disruptive, Moore reasons, since such technology is exactly what the health care industry needs, not to mention it’s central to the meaningful use requirements. Plus, Amalga UIS, developed in 1996, has plenty of high-profile customers.

The Amalga HIS news isn’t all bad. For one thing, those half dozen customers will receive support for the next five years, Moore notes. And, if nothing else, Amalga HIS outlasted the Kin.
